Does anyone have experience buying from an out of state dealer? The state sales tax I'd have to pay buying local is quite a bit more than the shipping costs. If anyone has experience with a particular dealer I would be interested in that as well. I won't mention any names, but give the Board Topic you can probably figure out who I'm referring to. ;)

Mike,
I bought out of state and have been very happy so far. As you indicated the shipping was less than the sales tax but more than that the dealer was willing to deal to the tune of several thousand dollars less than my local dealer. You'll find people on this board who advocate supporting local business and kind of look down on not "buying local" I buy local whenever I can and always give them first shot but I think it would be pretty stupid to give a local dealer a few thousand dollars extra to subsidize an inflated profit margin when one has to assume that they probably get the units for a similar cost basis. Wehn I give money to charity i at least want it to be tax deductible! If you have any specific questions e-mail me at gerard3787@aol.com ....

I bought out of state, used, and sight unseen.....It was a model that I was familiar with, and the seller was agreeable to making up an audio/video tape of the tractor. It was a fair deal, although I must say that the individual did fail to mention some of the defects. When I sell something, I make sure to mention any problems or even any things that I'm not sure about. Other people have other styles. The seller took it on himself to arrange shipping, which is no small matter. It helped that he was familiar with interstate trucking and was able to get a very good rate. ....

I opted to by my New Holland from out of state. Even if I could have afforded the JD, the local JD dealer was not someone that I wanted to deal with. You could tell that this particular dealer thought that both his and the tractors he was selling poop didn't stink. Sorry, but I don't need to be talked down to so that I could spend my hard earned ~$15,000. I liked the Kubota dealer, unfortunately for him, he couldn't come close to the price for a tractor with similar features. I support him through purchasing implements, miscellaneous part, etc. Then I had the choice between two New Holland dealers about equal distance from home, on in state and one out of state. The one in state was way off on price. So the tax situation you mention was an added bonus. Cha-ching. ....

Mike,

I bought from WAY out of state. I am in Colorado, and I purchased out of Tennessee. Could not have been happier with the entire deal. I too concur with many who say support your local dealer, but my local dealer was not willing to deal in any way, shape or form, so I looked to spend my hard earned money elsewhere. There is nothing wrong with that in any respect. Anyhoo.....I ultimately saved upwards of 4000 samolians on my purchase and even got some extra goodies to boot (boxblade, tire ballast, fold-down ROPS). The shipping on my unit in excess of 1400 miles was approximately 900 bucks, yours may be less depending on your location. I also escaped sales tax, but even if you pay it in Tennessee, it is only 1% I believe. I have included the URL to the dealer I made my purchase through, and the manager and gentleman I dealt with exclusively is David Bowman. He is a great guy and will tailor a deal just for you. David and I still correspond through e-mail regularly, and I still purchase items from him because of the way I was treated by him and his dealership. If you have any more questions about my experience, please feel free to e-mail me directly. Good luck.

Brian ....
